From Frozen to Flawless

Edge Computing Solves Winter Shipping Risks

The Problem: A Costly Winter Challenge

For companies shipping temperature-sensitive products, winter brings a costly risk: frozen adhesives. When water-based adhesives freeze, they become unusable, leading to wasted shipments, financial losses, and strained supplier relationships. Traditional monitoring solutions were either too expensive, required complex integration, or couldn’t provide real-time alerts, leaving businesses in the dark until it was too late.

The Trend: Smarter, Connected Logistics

Today, supply chains demand visibility. Companies need real-time tracking, automated alerts, and seamless data collection without relying on customer networks or complicated setups. The rise of IoT and low-power wide-area networks has opened new possibilities, but deploying these solutions at scale requires flexible, reliable connectivity.

The Solution: A Smarter Way to Track Temperature

My Blended Learning developed an innovative temperature-logging system that monitors shipments in transit without relying on external network access. Their battery-powered devices record temperature data, scan for nearby WiFi networks (for location tracking), and transmit updates via the Helium LoRaWAN network. At the destination, the devices automatically sync their full data logs through a simple WiFi connection leveraging Sixfab’s edge computers. The result? Real-time freeze alerts, precise location tracking (down to a few yards), and undeniable proof for shipping claims saving clients thousands in lost products.

The Enabler: Connectivity Without Compromise

Powering it all behind the scenes was Sixfab delivering reliable, zero-touch edge computers where customer Wi-Fi couldn’t. These industrial-grade gateways, built on Raspberry Pi foundations, provided the perfect bridge: cellular-enabled connectivity that worked out of the box, without requiring network permissions or complex IT integration. Sixfab gave My Blended Learning more than just hardware; it offered a partnership for scalable innovation, from temperature monitoring to future expansions like weight and tank-level sensors, all through a single, secure platform.

The Outcome: From Freeze Alerts to Future Innovations

Today, the system has successfully detected and documented multiple freeze events with pinpoint accuracy (within yards), enabling clients to recover thousands per incident in shipping claims. But the bigger win? The foundation it’s built for the future. With Sixfab’s connectivity as the backbone, My Blended Learning is expanding into overheating prevention, weight monitoring, and more proving that when smart technology meets reliable infrastructure, even the coldest challenges can be overcome.
